De la Bat celebrates International Day of Sign Languages

Annually, the 23rd of September marks a particularly special day in the calendar of Deaf Awareness Month for De la Bat School.

During the month of September DeafSA encourages the celebration of Deaf people and promotes the awareness of Deaf individuals’ human rights, equality, and prosperity. Furthermore, we come together to not only celebrate the rich cultural history of Deaf individuals but also to celebrate their linguistic, creative, social, political, and cultural contributions and accomplishments.

In particular, the International Day of Sign Languages aims to support and protect the linguistic identity of the deaf. Each year, De la Bat School celebrates this day filled with various fun outdoor activities. Staff, both hearing and deaf, together with learners wear symbolic blue colours to emphasize unity. This is a day filled with fun educational activities to promote South African Sign Language and to start the long weekend!
