FOUNDATION PHASE

The Foundation Stage aims to teach young deaf learners a basis for his / her school career through effective education and emotional support. The foundation phase is the starting point for formal schooling. From grade 1 to grade 3 literacy, numeracy and life skills are developed.

This includes the teaching of deaf children with physical problems, emotional problems, learning disabilities and autism.

The prescribed national curriculum is followed. It is adjusted to meet the young Deaf student’s specific learning and teaching needs.

The medium of instruction is sign language, Afrikaans or English as the language for reading and writing.

Speech development takes place within the ability of each learner and language teaching is done using the Red-star process which was developed by the teachers of the Foundation Phase.

GRONDSLAGFASE

Die Grondslag Fase stel hom ten doel om jong Dowe leerders ‘n grondslag te gee vir sy / haar skoolloopbaan deur effektiewe onderrig en emosionele ondersteuning. Die grondslagfase is die wegspringpunt vir formele skoolopleiding. Vanaf graad 1 tot graad 3 word geletterdheid, gesyferdheid en lewensvaardighede ontwikkel.

Dit sluit in die onderrig van Dowe leerders met fisiese probleme, emosionele probleme, leergestremdhede en outisme.

Die voorgeskrewe nasionale kurrikulum word gevolg. Dit word aangepas om te voldoen aan die jong Dowe leerder se spesifieke leer- en onderrigbehoeftes.

Die medium van onderrig is Gebaretaal, met Afrikaans of Engels as die taal vir lees en skryf.
Spraakontwikkeling vind plaas binne die vermoë van elke leerder en taalonderrig word gedoen met behulp van die Rooi-stêr-proses wat deur die onderwysers van die Grondslagfase ontwikkel is.
